Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam began in September 17, 1862. It was fought along Antietam Creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland.Confederate general Robert E. Lee had undertaken an invasion of the North. He was hoping to boost the strength of the Confederate, and to gain the loyalty of people in Maryland. He also wanted to tempt the federal troops away from Virgina to excuse the area from the damage the war would cause. George McClellan (Union General) soon caught onto some of Lee's plans and followed the Confederates.
During the war, there were many casualties. In the beginning of the battle the Confederates had about 30,000 soldiers, and the Union had about 60,000 soldiers. When the war ended, in the Union, 2,108 men were killed , 9,549 were injured, and 753 were reported missing. On the Confederates, 1,546 men were killed, 7,754 were injured, and 1, 018 were reported missing. The Union won. Three interesting facts about this battle is thet there was one deatch every 15 seconds, McClellan was removed from the position of Union commander for being a bad leader, and there were nearly 100,000 soldiers fighting in combat.
